What the CV does not tell you
Still the most common currency in the world of recruitment remains the "CV". With the explosion of the Internet, so the world population of CVs multiplies. It seems rather a shame, and also a source of frustration for recruiters, that the CV is actually, in our opinion, little more than a token of interest in employment. Whilst the CV indeed will usually provide all the information one might need to contact a job seeker, it does very little, on its own, to help establish how suitable a job seeker might be for a given position.
Let's take a look at what is often missing:
career objective - what the job seeker actually wants to do in his working life;
skills and competencies - in a majority of cases this will just be copied from the job seekers current job description;
areas of excellence - hardly ever mentioned;
personality - rarely anything beyond "hard worker" is mentioned;
likes and dislikes - crucial in assessing company culture fit...........
And so the list could go on. We feel strongly that recruiters who focus simply on the harvesting and distribution of CVs as a way of earning commission, should be called to account. The professional recruiter has to dig a lot deeper than the information presented in a CV, and at a very bare minimum must spend time with candidates to establish where they may be best applied into the job market. We must revive the "ancient art" of evaluation and assessment.
Job mismatch leads to high turnover, which in turn leads to low morale and self-esteem. These are destructive forces that eventually undermine the motivation and therefore productivity of our workforce.
We will continue to plead for improved candidate profiling at every turn of the road. And we will strive to develop tools and processes to assist the achivement of this aim.
